Learning to listen to our own voices—our messages to the world—and telling our stories from our unique perspective is key to becoming self-determined and free. Self-determination is more than identifying who you are in the world or defining yourself by what you name. It is an active process: motivating yourself and asserting your voice forward into the world.
I have a friend whom I honor greatly because he frequently listens to his own album. Instead of regularly choosing others' voices, he consciously chooses to listen to his own voice as an act of appreciation—for his talents and his message as gifts from the source. As Nikki Giovanni reminds us, we are our own first listeners, our own first audience.
This book marks the author’s maiden voyage into the realm of published works. It stands as a marker in time—a glimpse into the soul, heart, and mind of the writer. It is a personal oracle, meant to be consulted often for healing. Each of us is responsible for determining what we need to fulfill our needs. Know thyself.
“We can choose happiness” is a recurring theme throughout this manuscript, along with the idea of using whatever happens in life for the greater good. Everything can be seen as a blessing—a possibility for growth, a deeper understanding of self and the world around us, and an opportunity to refine our ability to transform life…to work magic. By creating happiness from everything we experience—and everyone we encounter—we open ourselves to receiving our deepest longings and desires in every moment.
The author believes: “Whatever we want is there for the having. Mastering life is a matter of disciplining ourselves to resist hatred, anger, greed, complaining, judgment, and anything that stands in the way of what we want most—happiness.”
Despite the tragedies and obstacles, the suffering, pain, and hurt we all encounter, there remains a universal truth: we all want to be happy. The moment we begin to experience the joy we seek is the moment healing begins.
It is not meant to be easy—but it is possible.
You are the only thing that can hold you back.
